With Halloween approaching, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging families to learn about and attend free, family-friendly Halloween events happening across all eight wards, according to the mayor's office. The administration is also urging the community to work together to keep kids and teens safe throughout the Halloween season, especially on Saturday, October 31, when many kids will be out trick-or-treating.

Several District agencies are hosting free Halloween events, including the Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Library, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, the mayor's office said. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice will also deploy Halloween Safety Go Teams on Saturday, October 31, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., in 15 locations throughout the District; the teams consist of non-law enforcement individuals who engage with families and monitor and de-escalate situations.

MPD is offering Safe Haven events in each of the seven police districts. They include a Haunted House at the First District station, 101 M Street SW, on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.; a Trunk or Treat at the Second District station, 3320 Idaho Avenue NW, on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.; and a Haunted House at the Third District station garage, 1620 V Street NW, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., according to MPD's Safe Haven schedule.

For drivers, MPD encourages motorists to be alert for trick-or-treaters, especially when it gets dark, to slow down, to watch for pedestrians who may come out from between parked cars, and never to look at a phone or drive under the influence. Families are advised that children should travel in small groups with a parent or authorized adult, wear bright, reflective and flame-retardant clothing, and cross only at corners and crosswalks. Separately, FOX 5 DC reported that the District's youth curfew became permanent law on July 2, and that clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, as daylight saving time ends.
