Paws in the Park Returns to Alexandria's Oronoco Bay Park on Sunday, Rained Out No More
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's free pet festival - adoptable animals on Rescue Row, a dog costume contest, live music and a family fun tent - takes its makeup date Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Old Town.

Alexandria's dogs get their day on Sunday, three weeks late and in better weather. Paws in the Park, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's free pet festival, runs Sunday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison Street in Old Town Alexandria. The event is the makeup date for a festival rained out earlier in the fall, when forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms and high winds forced the league to postpone.
The festival celebrates pets with a Rescue Row of adoptable animals, vendors, live music and entertainment, food and drinks, a dog costume contest and a family fun tent. The event itself is free; proceeds from paid activities support the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Pre-registration for the pet costume contest was open until Saturday night at 9 p.m., and the event's silent auction has already been held.
Paws in the Park anchors a full Sunday in Alexandria. The city's farmers markets are also open Sunday at Brenman Park, Four Mile Run and Montgomery Park, giving Old Town and Del Ray a second stop after the festival. Organizers say the event goes on rain or shine - a promise that held through one postponement already this season.
