John Washington III Calls for an Independent Citizens' Justice Review Process
John Washington III is asking who the people turn to for justice when the officials accused of wrongdoing are the same ones who enforce the law, and he is proposing an independent pathway that does not depend on the institutions being challenged.

John Washington III is calling for a serious national conversation about establishing an independent citizens' justice review process, arguing that justice should not depend on the approval of the same government institutions a citizen is challenging. In a public statement, he posed the question directly: what happens when the people responsible for enforcing the law are the ones accused of breaking it, and a district attorney refuses to pursue a case brought by a citizen with evidence of wrongdoing by a government official?
"Who holds the district attorney accountable? Who investigates the investigators? And who protects the people when the system refuses to act?" he wrote. John Washington III argued that Americans need an independent pathway to justice, and that the people should have the legal right to present credible evidence of criminal wrongdoing to an independent authority, especially where conflicts of interest may exist.
Under the process he described, that authority would be empowered to review complaints, investigate where warranted and pursue appropriate legal action, while protecting everyone's constitutional rights. "Justice should never depend on someone's political connections, government position, wealth, or influence," he wrote, adding that government derives its authority from the people and that the justice system exists to serve the people, not to protect government officials from accountability.
"Because if the people cannot hold their government accountable, who is the government truly serving?" he wrote. He closed the statement with a three-part call: "QUESTION THE SYSTEM. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY. PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE." John Washington III signed the statement as a 2028 presidential candidate.
