Montgomery County Schools' First Closure-Study Feedback Round Ends Monday, With Enrollment Down 4,083 and No School Named (Washington Sentinel News)

Montgomery County families get their last say of the fall on Monday in the first round of a school closure and consolidation study that has drawn crowds since it opened. Montgomery County Public Schools is running its first engagement round through November 2 - four virtual sessions and six in-person ones - and the opening meetings drew more than 800 people online and dozens more in person at Gaithersburg Middle School, according to Bethesda Today. The district, which began the closure and consolidation process in July, launched an interactive website on October 8 laying out enrollment, building conditions and how it balances resources.

The reason for the study is in the enrollment line. MCPS counts 151,967 students this school year on unofficial numbers provided by the district - a decrease of 4,083 students from 2025-26, about 3,000 fewer than projected, and the largest one-year drop since the pandemic-era decline between 2019-20 and 2020-21. The district attributes the fall mainly to declining birth rates and lower international enrollment. Parents at the first sessions told Bethesda Today the district had not yet shown the detailed data behind its thinking. 'How can you advocate for something if you don't know the questions to ask?' Wylea Chase, a Montgomery County parent and former school board candidate, told the magazine, while Angie Kronenberg of Save Our Silver Spring Schools said the district had concluded it needs to close schools without providing the detailed information backing that conclusion.

Nothing, however, has been decided - a point the district has made in writing. In an October 28 statement reported by Moderately MoCo, MCPS said no schools have been selected for closure or consolidation, no recommendations have been made and no decisions have been predetermined. The calendar ahead is long: a second engagement round runs November 30 to December 11, focused on how schools should be evaluated; the superintendent's recommendation is due February 4; public hearings follow from February to April 2027; and the Board of Education's decision on which schools to close is due April 15, 2027. Closures, consolidations and the boundary changes that follow would not be implemented until the 2029-30 school year.
