On Thursday, October 29, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Sixth District officers responded to the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast, for the report of a shooting at a bus stop, the Metropolitan Police Department said. Officers located an adult male who was unconscious and not breathing, suffering from a gunshot wound; DC Fire and EMS transported him to a local hospital, where, despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Yeferson Moreno-Gimenez, of Temple Hills, Maryland, police said.

At approximately 5:19 a.m., Sixth District officers responded to the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast, for the report of a male suspect firing a gun in a business parking lot, police said. Officers observed the suspect brandishing a firearm, and as officers exited their vehicle, the suspect discharged the firearm in the direction of a bystander exiting the business, resulting in an officer subsequently discharging their service weapon. DC Fire and EMS transported the seriously injured suspect to a local hospital for treatment, and the suspect's firearm was recovered on the scene, police said.

The investigation determined that the suspect involved in the initial shooting at the bus stop was the same individual involved in the officer-involved shooting, police said. The suspect has been identified as 47-year-old William Louis Chase Jr., of Northwest, D.C. Chase was arrested and charged with Murder 1, Felony Assault on Police Officer & Emergency Personnel, and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), according to MPD.

The members involved have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy, police said. The officer-involved shooting is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau's Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia, and the United States Attorney's Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411, police said (CCN: 26155305).
