A Sunday on the Mall: Ocean and Bison Cart Chats Anchor the Natural History Museum's November 1 Calendar

The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History keeps its Sunday simple and free: an hour with an ocean educator in the Sant Ocean Hall at 11, then an hour with the bison - the nation's mammal - at 1.

A Sunday on the Mall: Ocean and Bison Cart Chats Anchor the Natural History Museum's November 1 Calendar (Washington Sentinel News)

For families looking for a free Sunday plan on the Mall, the National Museum of Natural History is running two of its educator-led cart chats on November 1, the museum's official events calendar shows. The Ocean Topics Cart Chat runs from 11 a.m. to noon in the Sant Ocean Hall on the first floor, where an ocean educator stationed at an interactive cart explores some of the latest discoveries in marine science with visitors.

At 1 p.m., the American Bison Cart Chat takes over on the second floor, in the Bison: Standing Strong exhibit. Educators there walk visitors through the story of the American bison - the nation's mammal - from near-extinction to recovery. Both programs are gallery talks, free and open to the public, and built for drop-in visitors rather than ticketed crowds.

The museum's calendar keeps the animal theme running into the week. Megalodon Mania follows on Monday, November 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Sant Ocean Hall, and Tuesday brings a Play Date at NMNH - Animal Spotlight: Bison! - for young visitors in the Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, on the same morning District voters head to the polls.
