Maryland Employers Must Post the Worker Freedom Act Notice Starting Sunday, November 1

A new posting duty takes effect Sunday for Maryland employers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties and across the state: the official Worker Freedom Act notice, in English and Spanish, must go up where employees can see it and go to every new hire.

Maryland Employers Must Post the Worker Freedom Act Notice Starting Sunday, November 1 (Washington Sentinel News)

Maryland's Worker Freedom Act notice requirement begins on Sunday, November 1. Covered employers must physically post the state's official notice where employee notices are customarily posted, or in another location where all employees can easily see it, and the posted copy must be at least 8.5 by 11 inches. Employers must also provide the notice to each new employee at hire. The Maryland Department of Labor has issued the notice in English and Spanish.

The Act itself took effect on October 1. It generally prohibits employers from penalizing employees and applicants who decline to attend employer-sponsored meetings that convey the employer's views on religious or political matters, including union membership. The law was signed on April 28, 2026, and its requirements appear in Maryland Labor and Employment section 3-718.

The November deadline is separate from the law's October 1 effective date: October was when the protection against penalizing workers began, and November 1 is when employers' duty to tell workers about it, on the board and at hiring, kicks in. For the capital region's Maryland workforce - from Rockville and Bethesda to Hyattsville and Largo - the practical sign of the new law is a new sheet of paper on the break-room board starting this week.
